Most diamonds are found in the rough – which somewhat describes the location of a gem of a restaurant called Mango’s Grill and Wine Bar. Situated at the corner of Deltona and Citrus Springs Boulevards in Citrus Springs, Mango’s is a little off the beaten track for many Citrus County residents – but – according to Citrus411’s group of particularly critical restaurant reviewers, well worth the extra few minutes drive.
Our group was quickly and courteously welcomed upon entering the charming dining area, and was seated immediately. From our vantage point we could read the specials board, which proved to be helpful as our only criticism of the entire experience was our server did not tell us about the day’s specials. Had the board not been within plain view, we would have missed a wonderful beginning to our meals, which was a steaming bowl of Shrimp and Crab Gumbo. The temperature of the soup was perfect with no need to let it cool for fifteen minutes before being able to taste it. With a generous amount of shrimp and crab, the usual combination of vegetables, and a perfect, lightly seasoned broth, the gumbo received six thumbs up from around the table. Friendly Reminder: If you aren’t told about the specials of the day, be certain to ask!
Entrees arrived in an impressive (less than) fifteen minutes from order.
Our diners selected a Philly Cheese Steak, a Grilled Mahi Mahi sandwich, and Liver and Onions, served with red bliss potatoes and sliced, cooked carrots. The Philly Cheese Steak sub was piled high with what tasted and appeared to be thinly sliced prime rib, a testament to the quality of the ingredients utilized by Mango’s. Served with a choice of cole slaw, pasta salad or potato chips, both reviewers chose the pasta salad tossed in a very flavorful mango vinaigrette dressing. The thick, nicely-seasoned Mahi Mahi portion was large enough to have been served as a full entrée, and was deliciously tender and flaky. Both ladies were tremendously pleased with their selections.
The real test at the table was the liver and onions, and Mango’s chef passed with high-flying culinary colors. Most cooks, personal and professional alike, tend to overcook this nutritious meat, causing it to resemble a tough piece of leather. The liver served at Mango’s was cooked to medium-medium rare and was absolutely superb accompanied by caramelized onions. Freshly cut carrots and whole B-bliss potatoes were neither over or undercooked, and made an excellent compliment to the entrée.
The ambiance of Mango’s Grill and Wine Bar is especially pleasing. Tables vary in heights and materials, allowing for privacy in an area where the use of floor space is maximized. Ceramic tile floors provide warmth to the dining rooms, while also delivering a freshly-cleaned appearance. The background music is played at a pleasant volume level – loud enough to hear, yet not so loud as to drown out the conversation at your table. Tastefully decorated, Mango’s is suitable for both casual and dressy attire.
Our server was professional and attentive. She was knowledgeable about the menu, ingredients and preparation of the various items offered.
Overall, Mango’s received our highest rating: 5 GOLD STARS. Points are accessed in five categories: SERVICE, FOOD QUALITY, CLEANLINESS, AMBIANCE, and PRICING. Our group found Mango’s to serve great food at very reasonable prices, in a clean and pleasant environment.
